Siding in
Stony Plain, Alberta.
Old cladding on genuinely old houses, and new builds on lots with nothing between them and the prairie wind. Stony Plain siding needs to handle more weather than most, and be installed to move.

What Stony Plain actually needs from a siding job.
Stony Plain's exposure changes the siding conversation. A west-facing wall here takes wind-driven rain and snow all winter and hard UV all summer, with no shelter from either. Vinyl is the material most sensitive to that combination: it loses impact tolerance below about minus 20, and if it was fastened tight rather than hung to move it buckles in July and works its nails loose in January. On the exposed newer subdivisions we recommend LP SmartSide to most homeowners for exactly this reason, because engineered wood keeps its toughness in the cold and comes in 16-foot lengths that reduce seams across a long exposed wall.
The older core is a different project. Downtown Stony Plain and Forest Green include houses with original wood cladding, later aluminium over top, and in some cases both. Under all of it are wall assemblies built before drainage planes and rainscreen gaps were standard thinking. When we take that off, what we are really inspecting is the sheathing and the roof-to-wall junctions, because kick-out flashing simply was not standard practice, and forty or eighty years of roof runoff aimed into a wall leaves a mark.
There is also a character question in the older core. Stony Plain has put real effort into its downtown heritage, from the murals to the Multicultural Heritage Centre, and a house near that core benefits from cladding and trim proportions that suit its era rather than fighting it. We are happy to work to that, and it usually means paying more attention to trim detail than to the panel itself.
About Stony Plain
Stony Plain was incorporated as a village in 1907 and a town the following year, and the core still reads that way: more than forty painted heritage murals around downtown, the Multicultural Heritage Centre in the old brick school, and genuinely old housing stock beside it. Around that core sit some of the region's nicest newer communities, Genesis on the Lakes built around a seven-acre lake and Graybriar wrapped around the golf course. It is also the most weather-exposed town we work in, sitting further west with roughly 536 millimetres of annual precipitation and recorded extremes from minus 40 to plus 35.7.

Our Standard
What every Stony Plain siding job includes.
Siding is the part of the exterior people judge from the street and the part that quietly decides whether your walls stay dry. We install vinyl, LP SmartSide engineered wood and James Hardie fibre cement, and we build what goes behind them properly: a correctly lapped water-resistive barrier, head flashing over every opening, sill pans below, and kick-out flashing wherever a roof edge meets a wall. That last piece of metal is small, cheap and the most commonly omitted detail in residential construction.
Full tear-off and inspection
Old cladding comes off so we can see the sheathing. Rot found behind siding is common and it is always cheaper to deal with while the wall is open.
Proper water-resistive barrier
House wrap lapped shingle-style so water runs down and out rather than into the laps, taped at seams and penetrations.
Flashing done right
Head flashing above every window and door, sill pans below, and kick-out flashing where roof meets wall. Skipping the kick-out is how walls rot invisibly for years.
Vinyl siding
Hung correctly with fasteners centred and left slightly loose so the panels can move through a 60-degree annual temperature swing without buckling or pulling.
LP SmartSide engineered wood
Our most-recommended option here. Real wood texture, far better cold-weather impact resistance than vinyl, long 16-foot lengths, repairable and repaintable.
James Hardie fibre cement
The premium choice. Dimensionally stable, non-combustible, excellent impact resistance, and factory ColorPlus finish that holds colour for decades.
Trim, corners and details
Tight mitres, proper corner posts, and clean transitions at stone, soffit and roofline. This is where a siding job either looks finished or does not.
Clearances that matter
Siding held off grade, off roof decks and off horizontal surfaces so it is not wicking water at the bottom edge.

Beautiful, and the highest maintenance option here
Ranges assume roughly 2,000 to 3,000 square feet of wall area and include tear-off, house wrap, trim and flashing. Storeys and scaffolding, window and door count, gables and dormers, and any rot found behind the old cladding all move the number. Permits · Town of Stony Plain
Do you need a permit in Stony Plain?
Stony Plain follows the regional norm: replacing a roof covering or exterior finish with similar material is maintenance and does not require a building permit, while structural alterations, changes to roof shape or height, added floor area, and repairs following fire or flood do. Heritage-area properties in the older core can carry additional considerations, and we check before we start.
FAQ
Stony Plain siding questions.
For a home with roughly 2,000 to 3,000 square feet of wall, vinyl runs about $12,000 to $22,000, LP SmartSide $20,000 to $34,000, and James Hardie $24,000 to $45,000, including tear-off, house wrap, trim and flashing. Older houses with more trim detail, awkward access or multiple existing layers sit toward the higher end of each range.
Not bad, but it is the material most affected by this exposure. Vinyl gets brittle below about minus 20, so a west wall taking wind-driven ice in February is where it cracks. It also has to be hung loose so it can move through the temperature range, and installed tight it buckles and rattles. If budget points to vinyl we will install it properly and it will serve you. If there is room, LP SmartSide is the better answer on this side of the region.
Yes, and it is mostly a question of trim rather than panel. Corner boards, window and door casing proportions, frieze detail at the soffit and the way the cladding meets the foundation are what make a re-clad read as sympathetic or as a wrap job. We are happy to work through those details with you before anything is ordered.
For most homes here, LP SmartSide. Vinyl gets brittle below about minus 20 and cracks from impacts it would shrug off in summer, while engineered wood keeps its impact resistance in the cold, looks like real wood, and is repairable. James Hardie is the premium answer if you are staying long-term or the elevation takes hard weather.
We do not recommend it. Going over the old siding means nobody ever sees the sheathing or the water barrier behind it, and hidden rot is common, particularly below windows and wherever a kick-out flashing was omitted. Tear-off costs more up front and is the only way to know what you are building on.
Replacing exterior finish with similar material is generally treated as maintenance across the Edmonton region and does not require a building permit. Changing the exterior in a way that affects the structure, or work on a property with architectural controls, can be different. We confirm the requirement for your address before we start.
