What Sherwood Park actually needs from a siding job.
A very large number of Sherwood Park homes were clad in the 1980s and early 1990s in cedar, hardboard, or first-generation vinyl, and all three are now at or past the end. In Brentwood, Craigavon, Nottingham and Broadmoor we regularly pull off hardboard that has swelled and delaminated at the bottom course, and cedar that has been repainted so many times it is holding moisture rather than shedding it. What is behind it is usually more interesting than what is on it.
The detail we find missing most often on Park homes of that era is kick-out flashing, the small piece of metal that belongs where a roof edge runs into a wall. Without it, every rainfall on that roof section is directed straight into the wall assembly at a point nobody can see. On a house with an attached garage and a bonus room above it, which describes a large share of Sherwood Park, that is exactly where we open the wall and find rot. It is cheap to do right and expensive to have skipped.
In the newer subdivisions the job is different again. Homes in Cambrian, Hearthstone and Bremner often sit under architectural controls that specify acceptable materials and colours, and many are on open eastern edges of the community with real wind exposure across the farmland. Vinyl that was hung tight rather than left free to move buckles and pulls its nails under that combination of thermal swing and wind, which is why we hang it properly and why we recommend LP SmartSide to most people here.
About Sherwood Park
Sherwood Park started life in 1953 as a private development called Campbelltown, laid out for workers at the refineries east of Edmonton. Canada Post rejected the name in 1956 and it became Sherwood Park. Seventy years of building since then have left the community with an unusually wide spread of housing eras, from post-and-beam bungalows on generous mature lots to 2024 two-storeys with sixteen-foot gables, and roofs from every one of those decades sitting side by side on the same street.

For most homes here, LP SmartSide. Vinyl gets brittle below about minus 20 and cracks from impacts it would shrug off in summer, while engineered wood keeps its impact resistance in the cold, looks like real wood, and is repairable. James Hardie is the premium answer if you are staying long-term or the elevation takes hard weather.
We do not recommend it. Going over the old siding means nobody ever sees the sheathing or the water barrier behind it, and hidden rot is common, particularly below windows and wherever a kick-out flashing was omitted. Tear-off costs more up front and is the only way to know what you are building on.
Replacing exterior finish with similar material is generally treated as maintenance across the Edmonton region and does not require a building permit.
