Not on its own. Ice loading at the eave usually means three things are happening: the trough holds standing water because the pitch is wrong, an ice dam is forming because heat is escaping into the attic, and the fascia has softened so the hangers have nothing to hold. We look at all three and tell you which ones apply, because replacing the trough alone means doing it again in a few winters.
Five-inch handles the runoff from most single-family roofs in this region. Go to six-inch if you have a large roof area draining to few outlets, a steep pitch that moves water fast, valleys dumping onto a short run, or mature trees dropping debris. The material cost difference is small next to the cost of overflow at the foundation.
Usually pitch, sizing or outlet placement rather than blockage. A run that is level or back-pitched holds water, a five-inch run fed by two valleys can simply be undersized, and too few downspouts creates a bottleneck.
