What St. Albert actually needs from a roofing job.
St. Albert's older core is the most tree-shaded housing stock in the Edmonton region, and that changes how a roof ages. Grandin, Braeside, Akinsdale, Forest Lawn and Mission sit under forty and fifty-year-old canopy, and roofs there behave differently from an exposed lot: the north and east slopes stay damp far longer after snow and rain, moss and dark streaking appear where they almost never do on open lots, and needle litter packs into valleys and against the eave where it holds moisture against the shingles all season. When we inspect in these neighbourhoods we spend most of our time on the shaded slopes, because that is where these roofs fail first.
Those same neighbourhoods are also on the roof-age clock. A 1968 Grandin bungalow or a 1974 Braeside home has typically had two roofs since, and the current one is very likely past twenty years. Meanwhile Lacombe Park, Woodlands and Sturgeon Heights represent the 1970s and 80s wave, and Deer Ridge, Kingswood, Oakmont and Heritage Lakes the 80s and 90s. Between them, that is most of the city sitting in or approaching replacement territory at the same time.
The newer north end is a different roof entirely. Jensen Lakes, Cherot, Erin Ridge North and Riverside carry steeper pitches, taller gables and more complex rooflines, with less canopy and more direct wind and UV exposure. Steep pitch adds 20 to 30 percent to labour under Alberta fall-protection rules, and every valley and dormer adds ice-and-water shield and detail time. Those homes also tend to be sealed tightly enough that attic ventilation is doing real work, and we check it as part of every replacement.
About St. Albert
St. Albert was founded in 1861 as a Métis settlement on the Sturgeon River, making it the oldest continuously inhabited non-fortified community in Alberta. That long history shows up on the roofline: a downtown and river-valley core of 1960s and 1970s housing under a genuinely mature tree canopy, an eighties and nineties ring around it, and new construction pushing north into Jensen Lakes and Cherot. Royal Roofing's own shop is on McKenney Avenue, so this is the city we work in most.
Where We Work
St. Albert neighbourhoods we work in.
We have done roofing work across St. Albert, from the established streets in Grandin, Braeside, Akinsdale to the newer builds in Jensen Lakes, Cherot, Riverside.
Our Standard
What every St. Albert roofing job includes.
A roof replacement is only as good as the layers nobody sees again. We strip every roof to the deck, inspect every sheet of sheathing, and rebuild the system properly: ice-and-water shield at every eave, valley and penetration, high-tear synthetic underlayment across the whole deck, all-new metal flashings, and architectural shingles nailed to manufacturer spec. Then we correct whatever the attic ventilation is doing wrong, because that is what decides whether the roof gives you fifteen years or thirty.
Complete tear-off
Every shingle and every layer of old underlayment comes off. We do not do layovers, because covering an old roof hides the deck and voids most manufacturer warranties.
Deck inspection
With the roof stripped we check every sheet for rot, delamination and deflection. Anything that needs replacing is photographed and shown to you before we cut, at a per-sheet price quoted up front.
Ice-and-water shield
At every eave, in every valley, and around every penetration. In a freeze-thaw climate this is the layer that stops an ice dam turning into a ceiling stain.
Synthetic underlayment
High-tear synthetic across the entire deck, not felt on the corners. Better water resistance and safer footing for the crew.
All-new metal flashings
Step, apron, chimney and vent boots replaced rather than reused. Reused flashing is the most common leak on an otherwise good new roof.
Premium shingle systems
Architectural shingles from IKO, Malarkey, BP and GAF, with genuine UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated options for hail protection and insurance discounts.
Ventilation corrected
We check intake and exhaust against the 1/300 net free vent area the Alberta code calls for, and fix blocked soffit intake while we are in there.
Full site cleanup
Tarps during tear-off, a bin for the debris, and a rolling magnet across the yard and driveway for nails when we are finished.
10-year written warranty
A ten-year workmanship warranty in writing, on top of the manufacturer product coverage. If it leaks because of how we installed it, we come back.

Permits · City of St. Albert
Do you need a permit in St. Albert?
St. Albert, like the rest of the region, treats a like-for-like re-shingle or re-clad as maintenance rather than construction, so no building permit is required. A permit is needed where the work changes the roof structure, shape or height, adds floor area, or follows fire or flood damage. Our shop is in St. Albert, so we deal with the City regularly and confirm the position before every job.
FAQ
St. Albert roofing questions.
A typical Grandin, Braeside or Akinsdale bungalow generally runs $9,000 to $14,000 for a full architectural asphalt replacement. Two-storey homes in Erin Ridge, Deer Ridge and Oakmont more often land at $11,500 to $18,000, and the larger newer builds in Jensen Lakes and Cherot with steep pitches and cut-up rooflines can run higher. Class 4 impact-rated shingles typically add $2,000 to $4,000.
Considerably, and it is one of the few genuinely local factors in this city. Heavy shade means north and east slopes stay wet far longer after snow and rain, which encourages moss and dark streaking and accelerates granule loss. Needle and leaf litter packs into valleys and against eaves and holds water against the shingles. Roofs in the shaded older neighbourhoods commonly reach the end of their useful life several years before an identical roof on an open lot in Erin Ridge North.
Not for a straight like-for-like re-shingle, which is treated as maintenance. A building permit is required where the work changes the roof structure, shape or height, adds floor area, or follows fire or flood damage. We deal with the City regularly and confirm the requirement for your specific address before we start.
Most single-family homes are stripped, decked, underlayed and reshingled in one to two working days. Larger homes, steep pitches, or roofs needing significant deck repair can run to three. We give you a specific timeline with the written quote.
Architectural laminated shingles from IKO, Malarkey, BP and GAF as our core systems. For hail protection we install genuine UL 2218 Class 4 products including IKO Nordic, BP Vangard 42 IR and Malarkey Legacy. We name the exact shingle line on every quote, because "architectural shingles" is not a specification.
We inspect the deck as we strip it. Any damaged sheathing is photographed, shown to you, and replaced at the per-sheet price already stated on your quote, typically $75 to $150 per sheet installed. You never get a surprise number negotiated on your driveway.
